Sally was driving home from a grueling, exhausting business trip through the desolate desert roads of Northern Arizona. The highway was completely empty, and the silence was putting her to sleep. Spotting an elderly Native American woman walking alone along the dusty roadside, Sally decided to pull over and offer her a lift.
The old woman gratefully hopped into the passenger seat, and the two began sharing some pleasant small talk as the miles rolled by.
After a while, the elderly woman noticed a crinkly brown paper bag sitting on the console between their seats. Curious, she pointed a weathered finger at it. “What do you have hidden in the bag?”
Sally glanced down, smiled, and replied, “Oh, that? It’s just a premium bottle of wine. I managed to get it for my husband.”
The old woman sat in silence for a moment, staring intently at the bag. Finally, nodding with the profound, quiet wisdom of a true elder, she murmured:
