My trash can and kitchen always stank, until my neighbor told me of this ingenious and easy trick. I had no idea!

Even if you take the garbage out regularly, less-than-fragrant smells can escape and invade your house and garage. Prevent disagreeable odors from taking over with these clever tips and hacks to solve stinky garbage can problems for good.

These trick is all you need to keep your bin’s scent nice and the kitchen fresh and cozy.

1. Best Trick: Cotton ball and essential oil .

The trick we really liked was the cotton ball and essential oil trick. Not only is it very easy to perform, it also smells the best.

So here’s how it works:

Put a few drops of your favorite essential oil on a cotton ball and slip it in between the liner and the can. The scent will permeate the bin and should mask most odors until you’re ready to take it to the curb. Not only does it smell good to the trash already inside, it also gives a wonderful smell to the area around the bin.

You can use whatever essential oil you want, but there are some that do a better job of combating unpleasant odors.

Fresh scents like lemongrass are excellent against bacteria and balancing of odor, with stronger oils such as tea tree oil or mint removing insects and rodents, especially if your trash bin is outside.

How often to use this trick?

You can put the cotton ball with the oil as soon as you start to smell unpleasant odors from the bin, or you can make a habit of putting a cotton ball every time you replace the garbage bag.

You will use this trick better if you put the cotton ball at the bottom of the bin, under the bag, and replace it at least once a week.

2. Add baking soda.

If bagging and tossing scraps right away isn’t realistic, you can try adding an odor-absorbing material. There’s a laundry list of things that can help—coffee beans, cat litter, charcoal, etc.—but we suggests baking soda. Sprinkle it in the bottom of the bin, and it will help prevent and absorb smells.

You can makes your own odor-absorbing tablets by mixing 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/3 cup Epsom salt, 1/4 cup of water, and ten drops of lemon essential oil and then pouring it into ice cube trays to harden. She drops one or two tablets into stinky trash cans (between the can and the liner) and replaces them when they stop working.
