Nicholas Jensen’s timely presence changed a stranger’s life.
A former stone mason named Nicholas became a nurse trainee because he wanted to make a difference. The man was leaving work at Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia one afternoon when he heard a woman screaming for help. He rushed to her side without hesitation.
“She was looking for Emergency, but was heading in the wrong direction,” Nicholas explained.
The former stone mason quickly assessed the situation. A two-year-old toddler was turning blue and foaming at the mouth. Having known right away that the child was critically ill and needed prompt medical attention, Nicholas grabbed her in his arms in the recovery position and ran down the street to the Emergency department.
Video surveillance captured the dramatic rescue when Nicholas ran, her mother hot on his heels.
Once inside, staff pointed the way to a resuscitation room and took over. The child had suffered an atypical febrile convulsion, which are often caused by viral infection or fever. The girl spent two days in the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery.
Nicholas says he feels “great satisfaction” to help this family.
“This is why I got into this job, great job satisfaction. It is a meaningful career.”, he added
