Immediately Visit A DOCTOR If You’re Experiencing Any Of The Following Symptoms Along With An Absence Of Lunula

Most people have a small whitish half-moon at the base of each nail, where the nail attaches to the cuticle and finger. Some people cannot see the half-moon, or lunula, on the nail, while a missing half-moon may indicate that a person has a vitamin deficiency or a serious medical problem.

What does a healthy lunula look like?

Generally, healthy lunula are whitish in color. They are most visible on the thumb and occupy a small portion of the bottom of the nail.

What should I do if the lunula on my nails are missing?

This is not a danger sign and does not mean that there is something wrong with your health. Sometimes you may only see lunula on your thumbs or possibly on no fingers at all.

In these cases, the lunula is most likely hidden under your skin – chances are, if you can’t see your lunules, they’re there, but they’re right under your cuticles.

Disappearing moons can be the result of trauma or a sign of anemia, malnutrition or depression.

However, a sudden disappearance of the lunula is seen by modern medicine as one of the symptoms of a circulatory disorder.

In some cases, missing lunulae may be a result of trauma or a sign of:

  • Anemia
  • Malnutrition
  • Depression

Make an appointment with your doctor if you experience any of the following symptoms accompanied by a missing lunula:

  • Fatigue, weakness or dizziness
  • Significant weight gain or loss
  • Loss of interest in your favorite activities

If you don’t find lunula on your child’s nails, they may appear over time. In some people, they don’t appear at all because of physiological specifics of the nail structure.
The root of the problem.

The bottom line

In most cases, the absence of moons on your fingers is not a serious sign. However, if you don’t see moons, or if you notice changes in the shape or color of your moons as well as other symptoms, you should see your doctor. He or she will make sure that you do not have an underlying health problem that needs to be treated.
