I thought I had a sinus infection – the truth turned out to be so much worse

Annika, a 28-year-old woman from California, has described her traumatic story of being diagnosed with a rare and dangerous sinus cαncєr that required the removal of her right eye.

Initially, what appeared to be a simple sinus infection turned out to be significantly more serious. Annika’s physicians misdiagnosed the ‘golf ball-sized tumor’ that had spread across her face as a routine sinus problem.

Annika first felt irritation in the inner corner of her right eye one morning in 2023. The agony worsened throughout the day, resulting in severe edema around her eyes. Concerned, she sought medical assistance, and a CT scan revealed inflammation linked with a sinus infection.

Despite initial therapies aimed at relieving sinus symptoms, the swelling persisted and returned within a week. During a subsequent visit to the emergency department, medical staff discovered a golf ball-sized lump near Annika’s eye, which had not been present just weeks before.

Further tests confirmed Annika’s fatal diagnosis: stage four sinonasal carcinoma SMARCB1, a rare kind of cαncєr that had spread to her face, lungs, and lymph nodes.

While rare, sinonasal tumors are notoriously aggressive. According to data from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), this cαncєr accounts for only one percent of all head and neck cαncєr, with fewer than 200 instances recorded in the medical literature.

Annika went on a difficult medical journey, beginning chemotherapy almost immediately after being diagnosed. Despite noticing little progress, she underwent surgery in December 2023. The treatment involves removing tissue from her face, including her right eye, and replacing it with tissue from her thigh.

Annika is currently undertaking an experimental treatment regimen that combines chemotherapy and immunotherapy to delay the growth of her disease. Despite the gloomy statistics surrounding her health, she remains optimistic, recognizing the uncertainty of her prognosis.

Annika’s tale is a powerful reminder of the significance of quick and accurate medical diagnosis, as well as the tenacity and courage required to face life’s most difficult obstacles.
