A mother has shared a photo of her premature baby’s ‘goodbye hug’ for her breathing the last twin sister just days before she passed away.

In the touching image, little Charlotte Campbell can be seen wrapping her arm around her sibling, Esme, after their severely premature birth.

Just moments earlier the girls’ parents had received the devastating news that Esme had an extreme amount of fluid on her brain and would have no quality of life.

Amy asked for her daughters to be put on her chest for the last time when baby Charlotte made the gesture.

Just moments earlier the 30-year-old mom and her husband, Conor (32), had received the devastating news that Esme wasn’t thriving.

It was the first time their mum, Amy, had been able to cuddle them both together after they arrived into the world at just 26 weeks and five days.

“The nurses placed them on my chest and Charlotte put her arm around Esme and I thought ‘they love each other’,” Amy, 30, recalled.

She added that having her beloved daughters snuggled up in her arms was the “best moment” of her life, saying: “Everything felt so right.”

The next day the parents knew it was the right time to put an end to their daughter’s suffering and they held their brave little girl after her life support was turned off.

Since losing Esme, Conor and Amy have set up a nonprofit organisation in her memory called Campbellinas – their nickname for the twins.

Charlotte, now 22 months, came home with her mum and dad on the twins’ due date of October 10, 2016, and has been thriving ever since.

Amy feels that the girls have had a magical bond since before they were born and that Esme will always be there for Charlotte in that special twin way.
