A random text message sometimes leads to an unexpected friendship that can last for years!
Most of us would never misjudge a number if we received a text from someone we didn’t know.
One of the internet’s most beloved false connection stories is that of Jamal Hinton and Wanda Dench.
The pals first met in 2016 when Dench invited Hinton over for dinner through a text that was meant for her 24-year-old grandson. Because her grandson had switched his phone number, the message was sent to Hinton, then 17, instead.
There was some initial confusion, and the two sent selfies to each other that confirmed the mix-up. But when Hinton asked if he could still come over for dinner, Dench, now 64, texted back, “Of course you can. That’s what grandmas do … feed everyone,” according to ABC News.
The two ended up forming an unlikely friendship — and neither has let Thanksgiving pass without continuing their annual tradition.
2021 will be marking the sixth year in a row that the Hinton and Dench, who had been complete strangers up until their fateful text exchange in 2016, will be celebrating Thanksgiving together.
Like for many others in 2020, Dench had a very difficult year as she lost her loving husband due to the Disease. Hinton made sure to show his support for Dench during the difficult time as well.
Over the years, Dench also attended Thanksgiving with Hinton’s family and met the important people in his life. “Her finally meeting my family felt great! Family is huge thing to me so for such a close friend to be able to finally join me and my family for dinner especially for Thanksgiving felt great,” Hinton said according to ABC News.
As their sixth holiday together quickly approaches, Dench — who grew up as a military child because her father served in the Navy, according to ABC News — is standing behind her belief that family isn’t just those who are related.
In many ways, Dench and Hinton have become family now, and Hinton confirmed that the two of them will be celebrating their 6th Thanksgiving in a row together in a tweet!
