Anne Glancey has lived in her home in Hamilton Township, New Jersey, all of her life, but she is known among her neighbors as a notoriously private person, rarely venturing outside.
Her home, on the other hand, was hard to miss.
Anne Glancey was having some serious problems with her old house. Her home was not only in an unattractive state, but it was actually deteriorating to a point where it was becoming uninhabitable. The town authorities weren’t giving her any compassion either because they demanded that she renovate her home to avoid paying monthly fines of over $3,000.
Unfortunately, Mrs. Glancey couldn’t afford to pay these fines, and she wasn’t ready to move out of her home. She was in a predicament with no solution. She didn’t have family who could help her. She was somewhat of a recluse who went out rarely and seldom had company at her home. She was not in good enough physical shape to do the work herself, so she needed to hire some contractors to do the renovations.
As Anne lamented her unsolvable predicament, a ray of hope entered her situation.
Five years ago, a couple had moved into the neighboring house, and they were the only people in the neighborhood to show her some friendship over the years that they lived there. When Adam and Kristin became aware of their neighbor’s dilemma, they became concerned. They tried to speak with Anne about the problem, but she was too shy to talk about it.
The couple was very concerned for their neighbor, so they refused to give up on trying to find a solution to her problem.
The couple reached out to family, friends, and their local church and formed a group of 25 helpers, who worked every weekend for the entire summer in order to give Anne back the house she’s always loved and get rid of those troublesome violations. Together, the neighborhood cleaned, primed, painted, landscaped, and completely transformed the home’s exterior. They also donated that rusty car to the Purple Heart Foundation.
In total, the repairs would have cost $10,000 to $15,000, estimates Adam. The best part of the whole situation? Anne is a recluse no more. During the renovations, she came out to distribute orange juice and homemade treats, and she’s also started getting to know more of her neighbors. And those violations? As confirmed by Hamilton Township, they are long gone, and Anne’s home looks better than ever.
