The 11-year-old boy is being called a hero this week by his small town of Clarksville, Tennessee, after the big brother ushered all four of his younger siblings to safety when their home went up in flames.
But according to Brody, he doesn’t see himself as a “hero” — just a big brother doing what big brothers do best: protecting their younger siblings.
Engulfed in flames and smoke, one young boy chose to run toward the fire instead of away from it, all in the name of saving his little siblings – a responsibility only the eldest knows well.
Her house burnt and in pieces; all one mother, Kimberly Sims, had left from her home was a picture of her family, including her children.
Thankfully, these kids had also survived. This miracle was all thanks to the eldest 11-year-old Brody Sims, who put his life at risk. Hopefully, this young boy also made it out of the blaze unscathed and alive.
OUT OF NOWHERE
Kimberly had left the house to let her parent’s pets out when suddenly, a fire started in their kitchen without her knowledge. Her five vulnerable children were left to fend for themselves.
Luckily Brody remembered what his mother and father told him to do in the event of such an emergency, immediately flying into action.
A BUDDING HERO
First, Brody ran into the burning home to make sure several of his siblings were OK.
He ushered them outside to safety and then ran back in once more to rescue his sleeping 2-year-old brother.
“I was just crying and yelling my brother’s name,” he told WSMV.
Eventually, he made it to the back room of the house where his baby brother was sleeping, and he was able to pick him up and carry him to safety.
His mother returned home about 10 minutes later to a devastating sight.
The inside of her home was a burnt-up pile of rubble surrounded by first responders, who had worked as quickly as they could to put out the flames.
But the only things that mattered to her were standing right in front of it, without so much as a scratch or a burn on them: her five sweet children.
Kimberly Sims credits the fire safety lessons she gave with helping her kids survive.
The mom expressed how incredibly proud she was and appreciative that the children know what to do when these emergencies occur.
SURROUNDED BY SUPPORT
The Fire Department awarded Brody and sister Sydney with certificates for courage. They also gave all five children a ride to school.
The Sims extended family also band together. The kid’s aunt, Hannah Sims, created a GoFundMe page to provide the five children with toys and clothes for Christmas.
THE BEAUTY OF HUMANKIND
A little boy risked his own life to save his siblings – a fearless feat. Although beyond that, many individuals also came to the rescue in their own way.
First responders went out of their way to make a group of children’s day, and an aunt ensured that her nieces and nephews did not miss out during the holidays.
Going by all these kind-hearted actions, we can all rest assured that humanity truly has a good heart at its core.
