At 92, The Gerber Baby Model Is Still Just As Adorable As The Original Drawings

Ann Turner Cook, an accomplished mystery writer who was also an English teacher, recently turned 92 years old. Many people may not realize that her original claim to fame has nothing to do with her writing or teaching abilities. It involves an image of her face when she was just a little baby.

She is none other than the famous baby Gerber. Her sketched image appeared on the brand’s baby food and other products for nearly nine decades after winning a brand contest in 1928. In 1931, Dorothy Hope Smith, Ann’s neighbor, completed the charcoal drawing and became the official mark of Gerber.

The memorable drawing shows a young innocent-looking Ann with wide-eyed eyes, eyes wide open, expressing wonder and fear. Although the artist claimed that she would turn the sketch into a more complete work of art if she won the contest, the judges were so enthusiastic about the original sketch that they demanded that she become the official face of the Gerber brand.

The rest belongs to the story.
All over the world, people have recognized and cherished this cherubic baby face, which remains with Gerber products and advertisements to this day.

For over forty years, no one outside Ann’s family, Gerber’s inner circle and the artist had been aware of Gerber’s identity. All this changed in 1978, when Gerber finally let the cat out of his pocket and announced to the world the face she had admired for so long.

Even at age 92, you can see Ann’s resemblance to that pretty, cute baby on Gerber’s wrap. On November 20, 2018, she was 92 years old. Over the years, she has had the privilege of meeting Gerber babies, who were also selected to represent the brand, like Lucas Warren, a year.

He became Gerber’s first representative of Down syndrome. Lucas’s family was traveling to Florida when they met Ann in Tampa. The little boy smiled and motioned to Ann as soon as they met. His parents expressed their friendship.

Cook’s family member, Chris Colin, said that Ann had always considered his role of Baby Gerber as a unique event that brought people together. He is touched by the reaction of people to Ann and his image over the years.
