Little Johnny and his father were enjoying a quiet, peaceful weekend afternoon out on a calm lake, waiting for the fish to bite. After a couple of hours of total silence in the rowboat, Johnny started gazing around, suddenly overwhelmed with curiosity about the natural world.
He turned to his father and asked, “Hey Dad, how exactly does this heavy wooden boat manage to float on top of the water?”
The father stopped reeling his line, thought deeply for a long moment, and replied, “To be completely honest with you, son… I don’t rightly know.”
Johnny nodded, returning to his quiet contemplation. A few minutes later, a large bass jumped out of the water, sparking another thought. “Dad, how do fish breathe under the water without any lungs?”

The father smiled warmly, placed a loving hand on Johnny’s shoulder, and replied proudly:
“Of course not, son! You keep right on asking. If you don’t ask questions, how on earth are you ever going to learn anything?!”
