A waitress inherited $50,000 tip and a car after 7 years of patience with a ‘difficult’ diner

Waitress deals with ‘grumpy’ customer for years until he stops coming and she gets a surprising message

For those who work in a service-based industry, dealing with grumpy and demanding customers can be one of the toughest task in their day-to-day career. That was what Melina Salazar went through for seven years.

One Texas waitress had been serving the same “grumpy” veteran for years, but after 16 years in the job she knew how to handle him. Her skills and professionalism in the job eventually meant she was the only waitress prepared to serve the complaining customer each week.

Melina who works as a waitress at A restaurant, a diner in Brownsville, Texas had a chance to serve 89-year-old World War II veteran named Walter “Buck” Swords who was well-known among the staffs at the diner for being difficult.

Swords was one of the regular customers at the diner.

As an experienced waitress, she did her best to handle his constant complaining and demands but it wasn’t always easy.

Day after day and year after year, Melina did her best to fulfill all of Buck’s demands, which were many. She was the picture of professionalism as she dealt with his picky habits, many complaints, and overall bad attitude.

But one day her regular and difficult customer stopped showing up at Luby’s and she wondered what had become of him.

Soon, she discovered why the regular had vanished without a word.
It was summer in 2007 when she found his obituary in the local newspaper. While looking through her local paper, she saw Walter M. “Buck” Swords printed in bold capital letters in the obituary section. Buck had passed away at the age of 89.

Fast forward five months later before Christmas, Melina had the surprise of a lifetime when Swords’s lawyer came to the diner.

According to the lawyer, Melina’s kindness, top service, and understanding had touched Swords’ heart so much.

His heart was totally moved by Melina that he left her a 2000 Buick car and US$50,000 in cash!

There is no excuse when it comes to treating other people with kindness and respect. It may be hard when the other person does not reciprocate to our kindness but Melina’s story definitely shows that it always pays off to be kind to others.

For seven years, she tolerated the difficult demands that Swords often gave her but who knows that she would get a US$50,000 tip for her patience!
