Heartbroken Father Watches Infant Son Fight For Life After Wife Pass Away At Childbirth
Lauren and Matt spent 20 years of their lives by each other and were parents to three little girls, Ali Rose, Naomi Belle, and Layne Louise. And the anticipation of having a son had filled the Accurso home with so much excitement and anticipation.
“There was so much excitement because after three girls, they were having a boy,” said the couple’s pastor, Matt McCloghry. But things took a terrible turn on April 29, and 37-year-old Lauren died after a rare medical complication occurred during childbirth.
Grieving
As Matt was grieving for his wife and the mother of his four children, he also had to watch his baby boy fight for life whilst being attached to tubes and machines. Because of the complications from the birth, baby Matthew suffered a significant amount of brain injury, where his tiny body was struggling with cognitive function and development.
Sitting helplessly by his son’s side while he was attached to machines, Matt tried to hold on to whatever hope was left. “The ONLY hope in all of this could only come from his heavenly daddy who placed breathe in Matthews lungs from the very beginning,” the father said.
It was the time when Matt started wondering about miracles;
having lost his wife and the thought of losing his son, too, was a heavy weight to carry.
At the hospital, Matthew Jr. is wearing outfits that Lauren had lovingly picked out for him. “Every time I look at Matthew, I see Lauren,” Jill revealed. “In the middle of devastation, there is hope.”
But there is a long road ahead for the Accurso family.
Lauren’s daughters, who she homeschooled, are coping with the loss of their mother, while Matt will have to navigate life without his soulmate.
Residents of St. Augustine are rallying around the family in their time of need with meal trains, groceries and donations “People are praying. There are so many people praying,” McCloghry said. “We need to pray and ask God to do a miracle. He can heal this baby. I believe Matthew is going to go home with a clean bill of health.”
