They may not look like it at first glance, but these two girls are twin sisters.
Marcia and Millie Biggs, now 11, are often mistaken for best friends – but in a “one-in-a-million” case, one was born black and the other white.
The girls looked almost identical when they were first born in July 2006, but the amazing differences between the two soon became apparent.
Marcia and Millie Biggs looked almost identical when they were born in July 2006. But within a few months, parents Amanda and Michael noticed some interesting changes taking place. Millie’s skin and hair grew darker, and they thought the same would happen to Marcia.
Instead, Marcia’s skin and hair became much lighter. While she inherited Amanda’s light complexion and golden hair, Millie inherited her dad’s brown skin and dark curly hair. Other than that, their physical appearances are incredibly similar.
A mixed-race couple expecting twins, like Amanda and Michael, have just a 1-in-500 chance that their babies will have different skin colors
Mum’s “one in a million” miracle
Mum Amanda, who calls them her “one in a million” miracle, said: “When they were first born I would be pushing them in the pram, and people would look at me and then look at my one daughter and then look at my other daughter.
The school had to be told they were twins
The twins, who live in Birmingham, started secondary school at King Solomon International Business School in Aston, Birmingham, last year.
Their mum Amanda, 46, had to warn their teachers they are in fact twins.
Difference between non-identical twins or fraternal twins
Non-identical twins, or fraternal twins, occur when two separate eggs are fertilised and implant into mum’s womb.
As they come from two separate eggs, fraternal twins are no more alike than any other siblings.
Non-identical twins may also be different sexes.
In the case of Millie and Marcia, the twins inherited different characteristics from each parent at the point of fertilisation.
The girls said they were excited for their first day of secondary school, looking forward to meeting new people and start classes.
