A 25-year-old woman stated on Reddit that she recently became engaged to her high school love, a 26-year-old man. The couple had dated for seven years.
The Original Poster (OP) professed her love for her now fiancĂ© and revealed that she gets along well with the majority of his family members, with the exception of his mother, who has been “nagging” her over not having a kid.
OP wrote that, while this may be harmless, her husband-to-be has repeatedly told his mother that she already has a grandson, whom she refuses to recognize.
“My baby girl (5) is my best friend’s daughter. They regrettably passed away, and she was my godchild, so it only seemed appropriate that I should take her home and raise her in the manner that I knew her mother, my closest friend, would want,” OP continued.
She and her loved ones have been preoccupied with wedding preparations and have even begun purchasing bridesmaid outfits. The couple wanted to make their baby daughter a flower girl during their wedding.
OP revealed that the child (whom she refers to as Ellie) enjoys flowers, so it was only natural to include her in their big day to help her feel at ease as her new parents.
This is essential because the future mother-in-law is making life difficult for young Ellie. It explains why OP has been arguing with her regarding the child. Recently, during a family event, her fiancĂ©’s mother made harsh remarks about Ellie, saying:
“I simply don’t understand why an adopted child should take the place of a true blood.”
These words infuriated OP, and she sought the mother aside to ask her to refrain from uttering them because she knew how much Ellie valued being a part of the family. “She kept saying I was being rude to my new family,” OP explained.
The mother of one felt even more irritated by the in-laws’ remarks and exchanged some words as well. According to the OP, her in-law was profoundly wounded by what she said to her, but she couldn’t care less. She took Ellie and left the house, only for her fiancĂ© to return home and inform her that his mother claimed she verbally harassed her and even threatened her. “I did no such thing,” the OP wrote.
Days later, Ellie grew angry since she hadn’t seen her cousins at her fiancĂ©’s house. OP decided to gather herself and went to the house to apologize to her in-law.
Everything seemed fine until she heard Ellie cry. She dashed upstairs, only to discover her in-law raging at the child and holding Ellie’s teddy bear, which her late mother had crocheted for her. This teddy bear was quite important to me.
OP snapped again at her fiancĂ©’s mother, who stood by, ashamed in front of the rest of the family. She did not back down, though, and continued to spew cruel remarks. OP remembers:
“She then gained confidence saying she was upset that I had chosen ‘fake blood,’ over ‘real blood.'”
OP was heartbroken to see her kid weep as her future husband snatched the toy and led her away from the tense scenario. OP further expressed:
“I eventually had enough, asking if she had a problem with being the flower girl. She might as well forgo the wedding and join us for the reception.”
At that point, the in-law began crying, and while OP claimed she felt horrible about what she said, she refused to apologize. After leaving the premises, other family members informed OP’s husband-to-be that she needed to apologize and that they would not contact her because what she had said to her in-law was harsh.
