5-Year-Old Girl Saving Unconscious Mother From Drowning

Five-Year-Old Dives Into Action After Mom Has A Seizure By The Pool And Saves Her From Drowning

Tracy Anderwald, 34, told ABC News today that she and her daughter, Allison Anderwald, had been “enjoying a mommy-daughter day” in her sister’s backyard pool Friday.

Then She started having a seizure. She fell face down into the water and was close to drowning until her five-year-old daughter Allison came to her rescue.

After Allison realized her mom had not come up from the water for over five minutes, she jumped in, pulled her mother to the shallow end of the pool and flipped her body over so her head wasn’t in the water.

The Portland mother of four, whose memory of the day is blurry, said she was shocked when she watched home surveillance video of the rescue. “She saw that I was in trouble. She saw that I was not OK in the water, and she helped me,” she said. “It’s amazing that she helped me.”

Tracy Anderwald was underwater for nearly 5 minutes, her family said.

She was released from the hospital Tuesday, and doctors told them it’s a miracle she survived without any serious injuries. “It really captured how heroic that little girl is,” Allison’s aunt, Tedra Hunt, told TIME. “Everything that happened is a blessing. My sister is alive. Every second mattered. Every second counted.”

Not to diminish Allison’s bravery and quick thinking,

but this incident goes to show the importance of teaching children to swim early, too. The family stated that Allison’s swim strength came from that fact she’d been proficiently swimming since she was a small toddler.

Initially, there was a bit of concern that Tracy might have suffered brain damage from being underwater in the pool, but she made a full recovery without any consequences and has since been released from the hospital. The family hopes that their story inspires other to teach their children to swim early.
