3 Things нyperтenѕιve paтιenтѕ Should Stop Drinking to Avoid Worsening Blood Pressure

Hypertension, often known as high blood pressure, is a potentially fatal disorder that occurs when a person’s blood pressure consistently remains at unhealthy levels for a long period of time.

What should patients with hypertension stay away from?

1. Alcohol

Drinking too much alcohol can affect the muscles in your blood vessels. This can cause them to become narrower.

The more alcohol you drink the higher your risk of developing hypertension. If you drink regularly, you are at risk, especially if you are over 35 years old. One drink a day can increase the risk.

When your blood vessels are narrower, your heart has to work harder to push blood around your body. This causes your blood pressure to rise.

High blood pressure can significantly increase your risk of:

  • Stroke
  • Heart disease
  • Vascular dementia – caused by not enough blood getting to the brain
  • Chronic kidney disease

In order to protect their hearts and bodies, people with hypertension should not drink alcohol.

2. Beverages containing caffeine

You should not drink any beverage that contains caffeine, including coffee or tea.

Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, which means that it decreases the size of blood vessels and can increase blood pressure.

This is because caffeine is a stimulant, and stimulants can increase blood pressure in people who already have hypertension. If you don’t drink coffee regularly anyway, it’s probably best to refrain from drinking it for a while.

3. Beverage suggestions

Consuming sugary drinks or beverages can not only cause an increase in blood pressure, but also weaken the heart and increase the risk of a wide variety of other health problems. People with hypertension should cut carbonated drinks out of their diet completely. If your blood pressure is high, your doctor may advise you to avoid drinking carbonated drinks until you get back into a healthy range.
